It’s no longer a software problem but an industrial one. The economic moats that protect the market dominance are not the code; they are human genius, high-voltage transmission lines, and concentrations of concrete and steel.
Elite hires and huge paydays
Don’t let the “decline” in developer hiring story fool you. Talent is by far the scarcest resource in AI. Elite researchers, engineers, and leaders are the resource that pushes boundaries and cannot be replaced. A finite pool of PhD-level specialists (fewer than 22,000 globally) with deep AI experience are the reason companies are locked in a “poaching war.”
High compensation packages, equity grants, and autonomy are the keys, but companies are throwing bag loads of anything they have to win. This part of the moat attracts more talent and can create proprietary workflows that can’t be open-sourced.

Meta has been the most aggressive, forming a super-intelligence team. In July 2025, it poached Ruoming Pang, Apple’s former AI models executive, with a pay package exceeding $200 million over several years. At Apple, he focused on on-device AI.
Meta also hired Mustafa Suleyman from Inflection AI, Alexandr Wang (former Scale AI CEO), Yuanzhi Li from OpenAI, and others from Apple and GitHub.
But other companies have caught on with OpenAI poaching four high-ranking engineers from Tesla, xAI, and Meta in July 2025. Recently, Google disrupted a potential $3 billion OpenAI deal by hiring Windsurf’s CEO Varun Mohan and key engineers for $2.4 billion and integrating them into DeepMind.
AI’s Power Play
AI’s energy demands rival small cities. Training a single model can consume megawatt-hours, and inference scales exponentially. Securing reliable power through deals, imports, or self-generation prevents bottlenecks and ensures all important uptime.
This moat is amplified by global shortages in grid capacity, transformers, and materials like copper.

Recently Google signed a 200 MW fusion energy deal with Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) in June 2025, its first commercial fusion commitment, to power future AI data centers.
xAI, under Elon Musk, is importing an entire power plant from abroad for its Memphis data center, housing up to 1 million GPUs, due to U.S. build delays.
Intelligence at Scale
The AI supercluster has become the 21st-century equivalent of the factory. These are multi-billion-dollar, city-sized manufacturing plants for intelligence, the “gigafactories of compute”.
Meta’s Prometheus cluster, announced by Mark Zuckerberg, is a massive investment in AI training infrastructure, featuring hundreds of thousands of GPUs for next-gen models.
xAI’s Colossus supercomputer, had expanded to 200,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs by May 2025, consuming 250 MW of power. That’s enough for 250,000 homes with plans for up to 1 million GPUs and an $80 million wastewater facility for cooling.

Musk’s infrastructure prowess is not to be ignored, out of all the CEOs he’s the one that understands this the best. This is one of OpenAI’s weaknesses. OpenAI has to rely on others, for the time being for their infrastructure. xAI can burn cash upfront for long-term dominance, treating compute as the ultimate moat.
No to be left behind (Amazon, Microsoft, Google) spent $212 billion on CapEx in the last 12 months, focusing on AI data centers. AWS generates $4 revenue per $1 CapEx, Azure $3, and GCP $2.5, locking out smaller players.
The Real Moats
Ultimately, the real moats of AI companies are not just their algorithms or products, but these foundational assets. It’s a game of extremes: multi-gigawatt data centers, million-GPU supercomputers, and hundred-million-dollar hiring bonuses.
The companies that understand this…and can execute on all three fronts are creating a feedback loop of ever-greater capability and dominance. The future of AI belongs to those who can marshal vast power, awe-inspiring infrastructure, and world-class talent. Everyone else is just a follower.
